Follow Sgt. Kc Wayland as he personally documents the inspirational story of one Army Reserve Unit during a year long deployment to Iraq. Featuring live footage and interviews that will immerse you in all aspects of life in the war zone, this gripping exposé outlines the sacrifices and experiences of war from a soldier’s perspective.
“A unique, uplifting and fascinating documentary.”
BOOTS ON GROUND: A YEAR IN IRAQ documents the life of a United States Army reservist throughout his deployment in Baghdad. Wearing a helmet camera, Director Kc Wayland tracks his experiences as a soldier, from training at Fort Lewis where camaraderie is built, to his first trip to the Green Zone, and through Christmas mortar attacks and dangerous missions.
Kc’s first assignment was to start a radio station to help keep up the morale of the soldiers, similar to the one depicted in “Good Morning, Vietnam.” As a broadcast engineer in charge of technical aspects of the radio station, Kc also ran the audio-visual equipment for news briefs that would appear on American news programs like CNN. Towards the end of his deployment he was allowed to go out on more dangerous missions.
This film provides an honest look at deployment and a chronicle of the life of a modern-day soldier. While their mission was to build morale, throughout the soldiers’ deployment we see how their own feelings of well-being are affected by leaving home, danger, distance from families, and simple joys like packages from home and a new pizza concession.
This engaging documentary includes footage of the capture of Saddam Hussein, which occurred during the deployment, as well as very graphic torture footage found at the palace.
Run time: 60 minutes
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after this inspiring documentary by a 20-something Army reservist about his year-long tour in Iraq.”
