Writing Myself

An immersive playwriting program for at-risk youth in Portland, Oregon empowers and transforms the lives of its participants. We find out how as we follow eight students from the first writing exercises—through which they learn to write from their own experiences—all the way through to directing professional actors in a performance of their work.

‘Writing Myself’ is a powerful film about transforming the lives of young people through empowering and encouraging them to share the stories of their lives. The ability to understand and tell our stories is a critical aspect to being a human being in community with others and everyone would benefit from having this kind of support and experience.”

You see the students’ gears turning as they grapple with the ideas behind the writing and acting process. ‘Writing Myself’ gives you a peek into the lives of resilient students from an alternative high school in Portland, Oregon. You are rooting for these unique individuals as they find their voice to cheer for themselves.”

—Geof Garner, Program Director, Alternative Pathways,
Multnomah Education Service District, Portland, Oregon

Eight students from a Portland night school work one-on-one with writing coaches and actors from Playwrite, Inc. to write plays driven by their own life experiences and memories. One rule: none of the characters can be human. This required abstraction provides the students a chance to be more vulnerable and revealing than they probably realize. Students then direct professional actors in a staged reading of the pays in front of a packed theater. The results are deeply moving and cathartic.

Run time: 53:60; Closed Captioned
